CalWORKs Children's Reading Corner

The California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) Program at Mt. SAC strives to support student-parents as they obtain lifelong learning through education and help them gain access to the workforce by providing high-quality support services, including individualized academic counseling, advocacy and support, case management, and community resource referrals. As a student-centered campus, Mt. SAC has set up its CalWORKs program to mirror this model by providing a wide-range of academic, social, and leadership development opportunities that impact the educational experience of student-parents. CalWORKs students receive assistance with books and supplies, transportation, childcare, and other services designed to help them complete their educational goals.

As of today, the CalWORKs program has served over 200 parenting students during the 2020-21 academic year. The success rate for CalWORKs students during the Spring 2020 term was 71.4 percent, and the CalWORKs average GPA in Fall 2019 was 2.82 and 2.54 in Spring 2020.

By making education a priority in their household, our students are setting the example for their children. We know that literacy is the foundation for learning, which is why the CalWORKs office is continuing its community book drive in support of children’s literacy. Last year, our Children’s Reading Corner event collected 250 books. This year, rather than collecting new and gently used books for our students’ children, we are asking for gifts to be made to the CalWORKs Children’s Reading Corner Fund. This will allow our team to purchase new books and have them sent directly to students’ homes.

Just as we have done every year, we will be celebrating the culmination of this campaign with a day of activities—via Zoom—on April 15. Please help us make this a success! Choose CalWORKs Children’s Reading Corner Fund from the dropdown menu on the Student Services page.
