Professor Sandon Larson Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of the Professor Sandon Larson Memorial scholarship is to support a student who is determined to obtain higher education despite setbacks in honor of our colleague that had a huge impact on the Mt. SAC Sign Language and Interpreting Program.

Our friend Sandon Larson passed away, at the age of 37, on September 20, 2023. As a Deaf person, he held a special place in his students' hearts by sharing the love for his language of ASL and Deaf Culture with many people. He leaves behind numerous family members, friends, students, colleagues, and two young sons. We will miss him more than words can express.

Sandon began as a full-time professor at Mt. SAC in 2016 after serving as an adjunct at Mt. SAC and surrounding area colleges and universities. Though he had multiple degrees, it was his Master of Arts in Sign Language Education from the renowned Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C that he was most proud of. A self-described complete extrovert with a “yellow” personality type, Sandon lit up every room he was in.

He put his heart and soul into teaching others about American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. With this scholarship, we hope it will propel a student forward that has shown an interest in ASL and Deaf Culture.

These messages from Professor Larson’s students underscore the legacy he leaves behind:

“You were the light that made each room feel alive and welcoming. Remembering so many people's names and their lives. You were the heart that made everything feel warm. But.. now. You’re gone. It feels cold.. We’re going to miss you Sandon…”

- Sam

“Many of us truly loved being one of Sandon’s students & were always excited to go to his classes. One of the kindest & most encouraging professors anyone could have.”

- Bree

“Thank you for our friendship and thank you for being a great person in our Deaf community. Now you can be free and be in peace. Fly high Sandon. You will be missed by everyone.”

- Monica

“Thank you for always bringing a smile to my face and lighting up the room. Thank you for all the wisdom, laughter, advice and memories. Thank you for being such an important part of my life…”
